How the WordToolbox Counter Works

The pipeline

1. You type or paste text

The text stays in the browser tab. There is no upload, no request and no server-side processing, so nothing can be logged or retained.

2. Text is normalised

Line endings are unified and Unicode text is segmented so accented letters, emoji and non-Latin scripts are measured the way you see them.

3. Metrics are computed

Words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, lines, unique words and averages are calculated on every keystroke.

4. Times are estimated

Reading time uses 225 words per minute and speaking time uses 140 words per minute, both rounded to the nearest second.

Counting rules in detail

Words

A word is a run of letters, digits or marks, so hyphenated and apostrophised forms (“state-of-the-art”, “don’t”) count once. Standalone punctuation never counts as a word.

Characters

Characters are counted as user-perceived graphemes, which means an emoji or an accented letter counts as one, not two. Both totals — with and without spaces — are shown because platforms differ in which one they enforce.

Sentences and paragraphs

A sentence ends in a period, exclamation mark, question mark or ellipsis and must contain at least one word. A paragraph is any block separated by one or more blank lines.

Limits

Up to 500,000 characters are processed in a single pass. Past that you get a clear warning rather than a silently truncated count.
